How can I check if I have a leak?
Make sure no water is being used inside or outside of your house. Locate your water meter and check the leak indicator to see if it is moving. Depending on the brand of your meter, the leak indicator could be a small triangular shaped dial or a small silver wheel that rotates when water is flowing through the meter. If the dial is moving, there is a good chance you have a leak. Or, you can also take a meter reading and wait 1 or 2 hours and take another meter reading (make sure no water is used during this time). If the reading has changed, you have a leak.
If you determine that you have a leak, the next step is to figure out if the leak is inside or outside of your house. If you need help with that, call Day and Knight Plumbing and Drain right away to take care of it.
How do I know if it's time to replace my water heater?
A well-maintained gas water heater has a life span of about 10 to 12 years. An electric water heater is expected to last a little longer. Flushing a gas heater every year or two is ideal. That said, if you notice any of the following signs it's time to think about replacing it.
- It's gotten noisy. Popping and banging is common
- Rust colored water
- Not enough hot water
- Moisture or flooding around the base of your water heater
Another thing that effects the life of the heater is hard water or well water. A water softener can help. Day and Knight Plumbing and Drain includes the cost of bringing your hot water heater up to code when we do an installation.
Should I repair or replace my faucet?
If repair is an option then, of course, we will do that. However, if your faucet is too corroded or replacement parts are hard to find for an older faucet, then replacement may be easier (and possibly cheaper!).
